A residential exit is not a VPN app. A VPN is not a residential pool. This page compares those two exit types. It is not antidetect versus VPN. That sibling is profiles versus a tunnel. This sibling is how the packet leaves.

Two products, two blast radii

A VPN client (WireGuard, OpenVPN, a consumer app) usually wraps the whole PC, or a split-tunnel list of apps. Every browser, the updater, Discord, the OS resolver if you let it: one street.

A residential proxy is a host:port you attach to one profile. Personal Chrome can stay on the house IP. The ads profile leaves through the pool. That is the point of per-profile lines. Proxies in an antidetect browser.

Consumer VPNs often exit from datacenter or a small set of VPN ASNs. They are well listed. Residential pools try to look like households. Residential versus datacenter. Some "residential VPNs" are marketing mashups. Read the ASN.

When I pick which

Public Wi-Fi, I want everything tunneled, including apps that are not browsers: VPN.

One authorized dashboard that must leave through a household-looking IP, while personal Chrome stays home: residential (or ISP) on that profile.

ISP proxies if I needed still, not a pool. Mobile proxies if I needed a carrier ASN. We do not sell residential.

Ethics and shared subnets are residential-specific. A VPN has a privacy policy too. Read both.

How to test a residential exit is the lookup habit. For a VPN, check the same way: IP, DNS, WebRTC, IPv6.

Do not stack them by accident

A system VPN plus a per-profile residential line is how traffic takes a path you cannot explain. Pick one exit for that profile. If the VPN is on, the proxy may ride inside it or fail. I turn the VPN off when I am testing a profile proxy.

A "VPN browser extension" is closer to a proxy. It is still usually one browser, not the whole PC. Name it honestly.

A week I used both, on purpose

Travel day, public Wi-Fi: VPN on for the whole PC, including mail and the OS. I did not launch client ads profiles on that hotel network. Back at the office: VPN off, residential sticky on the ads profile only, house IP on personal Chrome. Stacking both on Tuesday would have made the ads traffic ride inside the VPN ASN, which is the opposite of a household look.

Consumer VPN apps also like to "fix" DNS. That can fight a per-profile proxy. I treat them as mutually exclusive for a given sitting.

If all I needed was to hide the hotel, the VPN was enough and this category was overhead. If all I needed was one dashboard on a household ASN, the proxy was enough and the VPN was noise.

Kill switches are a VPN feature I actually like on untrusted Wi-Fi. Proxies do not have an OS-level kill switch. If the line dies, the browser may leak to the house depending on how Chromium fails. That is another reason I check the lookup page after a drop, and why I do not treat a residential gateway as a laptop-wide privacy app.

Can a VPN replace a residential proxy for ads logins?

It changes the street for everything. It usually looks like a VPN ASN. Different signal. Sometimes that is what you wanted. Often it is not.

Is a residential proxy more private than a VPN?

Privacy is who logs what. A pool provider sees destinations. A VPN provider sees destinations. Neither is "more private" by label. Read the policy.

Should I run both for extra safety?

Usually no. Two exits at once is a leak story, not a safety story.
